PM
Artist Statement
“A photographic tale of the dynamics of love and passion. .”
Artists Maylei Hunt and Gavin Bradstreet have collaborated to present PM, an emotive piece that unravels and explores the PM romances encountered through chance and destiny. It draws upon traditional photographic and dance techniques yet ventures beyond narrative and visual norms.
The concept for PM was to pay homage to the original people of this country and to celebrate our unique identity as Australians. This panoramic tale, performed by professional dancers Waangenga Blanco and Katina Olsen, tells a story of two lovers and their journey, the passion, the essential moments of solitude, the electric synergies when together and their bond to the land. A wonderfully ambitious visual feast that takes you on a journey and celebrates love, life and the changing world we live in.
Hunt and Bradstreet have created a large-scale figurative photographic panorama, which fills the visual plane of the gallery. The format lends itself to epic storytelling and within these scenes, the characters move from urban to rural settings, they emerge and disappear within the extended scene and draw us into their tale. The piece pushes the boundaries of the photographic documentation of movement. As artists we are always seeking new ways to express and tell our stories; taking risks to see what could be possible and bring to life dreams into reality.
This new work is a product of the creative synergetic collaborations of the Artists, the talents of dancers Waangenga Blanco and Katina Olsen, hair by Belinda Goodwin and makeup by Natasha Pun.
PM was highly commended in the ITS#8 Italy competition (2008) and the piece is now in the ITS#8 Italy permanent collection.
